I graduated from the University of Queensland in Medicine, and have a Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree (Griffith University). Currently my time is divided between medical practice, lecturing at Griffith University (Gold Coast) and research at the Genomics Research Centre.
My current research involves an attempt to locate the gene or genes responsible for the inheritance of both a progressive kidney disease (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) and a cardiac disorder (Complete Heart Block) in an Australian family.
It is hoped that this project will lead to the development of a diadnostic test for these conditionds and a greater understanding of kidney and heart function in health and disease. Knowledge gained from this study may have wider applications in conditions such as diabetes, which is very common in the Australian community. Diabetes is expected to affect about 25% of the Australian population, and frequently leads to kidney failure. Disorders of cardiac rhythm are also a major health problem in all populations. This study has the potential to increase the understanding the causes of this group of diseases and may contribute to their medical management.
