Robert Smith
 
Robert Smith was born on the Gold Coast and attended local state schools. In 1995 he enrolled at Griffith University, Gold Coast and began a part-time Bachelor of Science degree, later switching to full time and graduating in 2000. In 2001 he completed his Honours year, receiving a First Class grade and began his PhD candidature in 2002, under Professor Lyn Griffiths, Director of the Genomics Research centre at Griffith University, Gold Coast.
Robert Smith's research career has been mainly focussed on cancer and breast cancer in particular. Robert Smith's research is primarily concerned with the root causes of breast cancer development and opens the way for further research into treatments based on the genes studied. Studies have been performed on a variety of genes, controlling detoxification, cell cycling, differentiation and other areas. Currently Robert Smith is examining the role played by nuclear hormone receptors in sporadic breast cancer.
